Why I Give
Katherine Macomber Millman of Port Townsend, Washington
What kind of work and/or volunteering do you do?
I鈥檝e been doing body-centered healing work since 1986, after focusing for over 10 years in social activist and collectivist work around domestic violence and sexual assault. I moved into bodywork because that鈥檚 where violence is experienced. I create safe spaces to help people step into their own centers, listen to the wisdom of their bodies, and live into their fullest selves. I believe that as we awaken to our own embodied sense of place and purpose and possibilities, we become part of the great collective improvisation, birthing a new and better world.
How did you come to YES!?
I saw the magazine and thought, 鈥溾榊es鈥 is one of my favorite words! I have to read it!鈥 Right away, I loved it because it was about real people doing real things, showing what鈥檚 possible. We talk about how we鈥檇 like the world to be, but YES! takes the possibilities and brings them down to Earth. It says, 鈥淭hese things are really happening in these places.鈥 We desperately need that voice to ground where we鈥檙e trying to go and give us something to focus on beyond the negative, cynical cacophony that鈥檚 out there.
Why do you feel the work of YES! is important?
I feel like YES! is a beacon or a North Star. When you see that people are doing things that are making the world better, you understand that those things are possible. YES! is a glimpse into the future as much as it鈥檚 showing what鈥檚 happening in the present. It says, 鈥淭his is what we mean when we say we want a more just, beautiful, kind, and fun world,鈥 and it shows us how we can get there.
How does YES! support your values and your work to build a better world?
Well, I can鈥檛 do everything. There are too many issues that need addressing! But I believe we鈥檙e each wired for doing certain things. When I look at YES!, I see other people bringing their gifts to other issue areas, and I can rest in the knowledge that we鈥檙e each doing what we鈥檙e meant to do鈥攁nd the whole big organism of us gets to thrive.
Why do you support YES! at this level?
Getting this information into people鈥檚 hands is such a beautiful way to support the emerging collective culture鈥攁nd I鈥檓 all for that!
