In Cleveland, Hoop Houses Turn Empty Lots into Year Round Farms
Meet the urban cousin of a traditional barn raising: community members working together to build DIY greenhouses.
In this video produced by the nonprofit organization Fair Food Network, we meet residents of a historically marginalized neighborhood in Cleveland, Ohio, as they work together to transform vacant lots into small farms.
The effort is part of the city’s Urban Agriculture Project, in which city government, nonprofit groups, and local residents work together to boost urban agriculture produce by building hoop houses on Cleveland farms.
Hoop houses are an affordable and relatively easy to build type of greenhouse, and allow farmers to dramatically extend the growing season.
